I replaced it with a USA Sylvania. Otherwise, the rest of the tubes on the chassis tested good. I bought some of that St James Grey paint from Nebraska sales and topcoated the cabinet. There were some scratches on the top of the cabinet that I felt detracted from the nice condition of the radio. That went well, and now the cabinet has a clean, fresh appearance to it.

Minor condition problems were present, mostly in the form of surface rust. The most significant rust damage had occurred on the back of the power supply case and the front of the power amplifier case. As for the receiver, some minor rust was present on the case mounting lips but the most serious rust was located in the RF coil section of the chassis. Most of the electrolytics had been replaced over the years, a coaxial cable was installed to replace a shielded cable in Receiver B, the Master RF Gain and Audio Gain controls had been replaced along with a handful of other resistors and capacitors but the essentially the receiver was complete and no modifications had be installed – just repairs.

The other change is the data plate that identifies the receiver. The RCR and the NC CS provide a Z ohm and an 8Z ohm audio output along with an option to allow a 10K Z ohm input the essentially parallels the audio output transformer in the receiver with another audio output transformer mounted on the speaker.

This allowed using the regular National table speaker if desired. Also, one could opt for the rack mount version of the speaker. It was also acceptable to just use the Z or 8Z ohm outputs for audio output connections. The audio output uses push-pull 6V6 tubes which differs from previous National Airport Receivers that used single audio output tubes. Since the RCR is a commercial receiver it doesn’t have amateur bandspread coils and its six bands covers kc to kc Band F and then 1.

The receiver uses 12 tubes and is single preselection with two IF amplifiers and provides a crystal filter for selectivity control.
