A Guy’s Take on Being on a Break

Dating is really hard. First you have to find someone with whom you share a mutual attraction, then you have to make sure that you want the same thing in terms of commitment. But the hardest part is meeting someone. As a result, many have turned to online dating sites. In fact, a third of recently married couples met online. It’s time for a frank discussion! What I learned from interviews was that online dating is equally painful for men and for women, but for very different reasons. As the saying goes: Women are afraid men will kill them. Here are the tricks I used to win women’s hearts — and how to spot them.

Older Women Dating Younger Men: Doomed from the Start or Happily Ever After in Cougarville?

Some women are recently divorced. Others became widows or simply chose to never to marry in the first place. This leaves many women wondering whether it is worth re-entering the dating world and looking for the best way to go about finding love after We recently posed a question on Facebook to our Sixty and Me community, asking women our age who might have gone through a recent divorce and entering the world of over 60 dating for the first time.

Editor’s Note: A little while back, I was having a conversation online with a close guy friend of mine about “breaks.” As we learned from Ross on “Friends,” the rules of being on a break can get murky and may wind up costing you your entire relationship.

In that article, I explained my hypothesis that women are stuck in a double-bind between what they are told through modern social norms and their own biological motivation. This week, I will discuss how that double-bind for women may have resulted in a double-bind for men as well. Today, men are given confusing and contradictory advice. Socially, they are expected to be “compliant” i.

However, they are also urged by women’s sexual interest to maintain an “attractive personality” i. Unfortunately, men sometimes report that attempting to balance these notions does not result in satisfaction, happiness, or women’s appreciation and respect. The men that I speak with and who commented on my last post lament about being in a “no win situation” in modern dating. If they follow what society tells them to do, they often end up “good guys” who are taken advantage of, mistreated, and disrespected.

In contrast, if they follow more “assertive” biological imperatives, they are labeled “jerks” and “players”—who may get sexual gratification, but not love or respect from what they would consider a “good woman”. Overall, they report that there is often little incentive for men to date and even less for them to consider long-term commitments.

Double-Binds and Insufficient Incentives In a previous article, I put forward the notion that individuals were not “afraid” to date—rather they simply did not have sufficient incentive to do so see here. We are all motivated to seek out rewards and avoid punishments Skinner, When rewards outweigh punishment, people perform behaviors. When punishments weight more heavily, people avoid those same behaviors.

That was 11 years ago. I just saw the above article about how women are losing the dating game. Courtship really is a harsh petri dish of evolutionary psychology. My observations In general, men pursue beauty while women pursue capability. And as such, women largely focus on how to appear attractive, while men largely focus on how to appear powerful. My overall feeling is that—like cancer and liver failure—none of this is ok. This entire wicked game of courtship and mating is a disease that comes with our mortal, animal nature.

I look forward to a time when such games will no longer be necessary. Unfortunately this requires some significant changes to humanity, namely: People not having the evolutionary drive to compete for reproduction opportunities. People not having vastly different capabilities. People not having vastly different beauty.

Those women are getting what they deserve!

Finding Love After 60 – Advice from the Sixty and Me Community

I thought that since I was an attractive, fit, well-educated, financially and emotionally secure guy that I would have no problem finding a woman in her mid 30s to settle down with and start a family.
